BWP, BWR or MR: which plywood belongs where

The stamp on a plywood sheet is the single biggest predictor of whether your kitchen survives a decade in Kolkata. Here is what each grade means and where it belongs.

In short

  • BWP (marine grade) for kitchen bases and anywhere near standing water.
  • BWR is the sensible default for wardrobes and bedroom joinery.
  • MR ply has no place in a Kolkata kitchen, whatever the saving looks like.

Plywood grading sounds like a technicality until the monsoon arrives. The grade describes how the sheet's layers are bonded, and that bond is what decides whether a cabinet base survives standing water or swells into a write-off.

The three grades

GradeBondWhere it belongs
BWP / MarineBoiling water proof, phenolic resinKitchen bases, sink run, bathroom vanities
BWRBoiling water resistantWardrobes, beds, living room joinery
MRMoisture resistant onlyDry, low-risk interior work — not kitchens

MR is not a fraudulent product. It is a perfectly reasonable material in a dry climate for joinery that will never meet water. Kolkata is not a dry climate, and a kitchen base is not joinery that will never meet water.

Why the sink run matters most

Failures almost never start on a shutter face. They start at the bottom edge of the base unit under the sink, where a slow trap leak keeps the panel damp for weeks before anyone notices. A BWP panel shrugs that off. An MR panel delaminates, swells, and takes the shutter alignment with it.

How to check you got what you paid for

  1. 1Ask to see the sheets before cutting — the grade and IS code are stamped along the edge.
  2. 2Look for IS:710 for BWP and IS:303 for BWR on the stamp, not just a brand name.
  3. 3Check the core: a good sheet has even, gap-free layers when you look at a cut edge.
  4. 4Ask for the purchase invoice for your job's material. A company that bought it can show it.
  5. 5Visit the workshop mid-production. It is the fastest way to confirm everything above.

Our own background is the timber trade — the family business has been buying and seasoning wood since 1974 — which is mostly why we are difficult about this. Material specification is the part of an interior you cannot see and cannot fix later.
